Chai-Five: The Jewish Drinking Game

L'Chaim! Get ready to test your knowledge, share a laugh, and maybe even a little kvetch with Chai-Five, Project Beer's take on a fantastic Jewish drinking game. Whether you're a seasoned bubbe or just curious about Jewish culture, this game is designed for maximum fun and minimal fuss. Just remember: always drink responsibly, know your limits, and make sure everyone gets home safe!

What You'll Need:

  • Your favourite beers, ciders, or spirits
  • A minimum of 3 players (the more the merrier, up to 8!)
  • A deck of index cards or slips of paper (or print our suggested prompts below!)
  • Pens or markers
  • A good sense of humour!

Setup:

  1. Craft Your Cards: On each index card, write one of the Jewish-themed challenges or questions from the 'Chai-Five Challenges' section below. You can mix and match, or create your own! Aim for at least 20-30 cards for a good game.
  2. Shuffle Up: Once all your challenge cards are ready, give them a good shuffle and place them face down in a central pile. This is your 'Chai Challenge Deck'.
  3. Pour Your Pints: Ensure everyone has a drink ready.
  4. Designate the 'Chai-Master': Decide who goes first. This player is the first 'Chai-Master' for the round.

How to Play:

Chai-Five is played in rounds, with players taking turns as the 'Chai-Master'.

  1. Draw a Challenge: The current Chai-Master draws the top card from the Chai Challenge Deck and reads it aloud to the group.
  2. The Challenge Begins: Depending on the card, the Chai-Master will either ask a question, issue a prompt, or set a small task for the other players (or sometimes themselves!).
  3. Resolve & Drink:
    • If a player fails a challenge, answers incorrectly, or cannot complete a task as specified, they take a 'Chai Sip' (a standard sip of their drink).
    • Some challenges might require multiple players to drink, or even the Chai-Master if they fail to judge correctly!
    • For challenges that involve voting or subjective answers (like 'Kvetch Corner'), the Chai-Master has the final say, but democratic votes are encouraged!
  4. Pass the Baton: Once the challenge is resolved and any sips are taken, the role of Chai-Master passes to the player on their left for the next round.
  5. Keep Going: Continue playing until the Chai Challenge Deck runs out, or until everyone feels sufficiently 'Chai'!

Chai-Five Challenges (Examples):

Here are some ideas for your challenge cards. Feel free to get creative!

Mitzvah Moment (Good Deed Challenges)

  • Prompt: "Give a genuine compliment to another player at the table."
Consequence: If you can't think of one or it's clearly insincere, take a Chai Sip.
  • Prompt: "Offer to get another player a refill for their drink."
Consequence: If you refuse or they decline your help (and you don't offer to someone else), take a Chai Sip.

Kvetch Corner (Minor Grievance Challenges)

  • Prompt: "Share a minor, relatable complaint about your day or week. Other players vote if it's a legitimate 'kvetch'."
Consequence: If the majority votes 'not a legitimate kvetch', take a Chai Sip.
  • Prompt: "Complain about something trivial in the room right now (e.g., 'This cushion is too plump!')."
Consequence: If you can't think of anything or your complaint is too serious, take a Chai Sip.

Shabbat Shout-Out (Jewish Culture & Trivia)

  • Question: "Name a Jewish holiday that isn't Hanukkah or Passover."
Consequence: Incorrect answer or inability to name one: Take a Chai Sip.
  • Question: "What is the traditional Jewish blessing over wine?" (Answer: Borei Pri HaGafen)
Consequence: Incorrect answer: Take a Chai Sip.
  • Question: "Name a traditional Jewish food item that isn't Matzah or Gefilte fish."
Consequence: Incorrect answer or repetition: Take a Chai Sip.

Oy Vey! (Never Have I Ever style)

  • Prompt: "Never have I ever... been to a Bar or Bat Mitzvah."
Consequence: Anyone who HAS been to one, takes a Chai Sip.
  • Prompt: "Never have I ever... tried a Hamentash."
Consequence: Anyone who HAS tried one, takes a Chai Sip.

Rules for a Good Time:

  • Be Respectful: This game is all about fun and light-hearted engagement with Jewish culture. Keep it positive and respectful.
  • Chai Sip vs. L'Chaim Shot: A 'Chai Sip' is a standard sip. For an optional harder consequence, you can designate a 'L'Chaim Shot' for particularly tricky challenges (e.g., a small shot of a spirit). Agree on this before you start!
  • No Cheating: The Chai-Master is the ultimate arbiter, but good sportsmanship is key.
  • Drink Responsibly: This is the most important rule! Pace yourselves, hydrate with water, and never drink and drive. If anyone feels uncomfortable or has had enough, they should stop.

Variations:

  • The Rabbi's Rant (Hard Mode): Introduce more obscure trivia questions or challenges that require deeper knowledge of Jewish history or Hebrew phrases.
  • Purim Party (Action Mode): Add charades or acting challenges related to Jewish figures, stories, or traditions. For example: "Act out a scene from the Purim story" or "Impersonate a Yiddish character."
  • Shabbat Shalom (Chill Mode): Focus more on the 'Mitzvah Moment' and 'Kvetch Corner' cards for a more relaxed, conversational game.

So, gather your friends, pour a round, and get ready for some serious fun with Chai-Five! L'Chaim!
