The Great British Bluff Off
Prepare for a hilarious battle of wits and deception with 'The Great British Bluff Off'! This card-based drinking game challenges players to distinguish obscure UK truths from cunningly crafted bluffs.

The Great British Bluff Off: Can You Spot the Truth (or the Lie)?
Welcome, knowledge seekers and master deceivers, to 'The Great British Bluff Off'! This game is a delightful blend of obscure UK trivia, quick thinking, and good old-fashioned bluffing. Perfect for a night in with mates, it's designed to get you giggling, guessing, and maybe even learning a thing or two about the quirky corners of Britain.
Setup
- Players: 3-8 players.
- What You Need:
- A deck of 'Great British Bluff Off' cards (or print your own with obscure UK facts!). Each card should have one genuine, bizarre UK fact.
- Drinks for all players (beer, cider, spirits, or soft drinks – whatever you fancy!).
- Optional: Small pieces of paper or tokens for each player to secretly vote 'Truth' or 'Bluff'. Alternatively, players can simply point or use fingers.
- Preparation: Shuffle the deck of fact cards and place them face down in the centre of the playing area. Ensure everyone has a full drink ready!
How to Play
The game is played in rounds, with one player acting as the 'Quizmaster' for each round.
- Choose Your First Quizmaster: The player who most recently visited a UK landmark (or simply the youngest/oldest, or by rock-paper-scissors) goes first as the Quizmaster.
- Draw a Fact Card: The Quizmaster draws a card from the top of the deck. They read the genuine UK fact silently to themselves.
- The Bluff or Truth Decision: The Quizmaster then makes a crucial decision:
- Option A: Tell the Truth. The Quizmaster reads the fact exactly as it's written on the card.
- Option B: Invent a Bluff. The Quizmaster invents a convincing, but entirely false, alternative fact related to the UK. The key is to make it sound plausible!
- Present the Statement: The Quizmaster clearly states their chosen 'fact' (whether true or false) to the other players. Encourage them to use their best storytelling skills!
- Players Vote: The other players (the 'Bluff Detectives') then discuss amongst themselves (or silently ponder) whether the Quizmaster's statement is 'Truth' or 'Bluff'. When ready, on the count of three, all Bluff Detectives simultaneously reveal their vote (e.g., by pointing 'up' for Truth and 'down' for Bluff, or revealing their paper tokens).
- The Revelation: The Quizmaster then proudly reveals whether their statement was a 'Truth' or a 'Bluff'.
- Drinking Time! Based on the revelation and the votes, drinks are taken. See the 'Rules' section below for full details.
- Pass the Baton: Once the drinks are consumed, the player to the left of the current Quizmaster becomes the new Quizmaster for the next round. Play continues until you run out of cards, drinks, or decide to call it a night!
Rules (When to Drink)
The drinking rules are simple, but the bluffing strategy can get complex!
If the Quizmaster Told the Truth:
- Any Bluff Detective who voted 'Bluff' drinks.
- Bluff Detectives who voted 'Truth' are safe.
- The Quizmaster is safe.
If the Quizmaster Invented a Bluff:
- Successful Bluff: If the majority of Bluff Detectives voted 'Truth' (meaning they were fooled), then all those Bluff Detectives drink. The Quizmaster is safe and celebrates their masterful deception!
- Bluff Called Out: If the majority of Bluff Detectives voted 'Bluff' (meaning they saw through the lie), then the Quizmaster drinks. The clever Bluff Detectives are safe!
- (In the case of a tie in votes for a bluff, the Quizmaster still drinks for not convincing a clear majority.)
General Drinking Rules:
- A 'drink' typically means a sip from your beverage. Agree on the size of a sip beforehand (e.g., 'two fingers' worth, or a 'gulp').
- Always drink responsibly. If you're falling behind, feel free to switch to a softer drink or just take smaller sips.
Variations to Keep it Fresh
- Scoring System: Instead of drinking, assign points. Quizmaster gets 1 point for every player fooled by a bluff, or 1 point for every player who incorrectly called a truth a bluff. Bluff Detectives get 1 point for correctly identifying a bluff. First to X points wins. Losers drink!
- Double Down: For advanced players, if a Quizmaster successfully bluffs everyone, everyone who voted 'Truth' takes two drinks!
- Theme Nights: Create specific decks for different regions of the UK (e.g., 'Scottish Shenanigans', 'Welsh Wonders') or specific topics (e.g., 'British Royal Bluffs', 'UK Food Follies').
- Creative Consequences: Instead of just drinking, introduce other light-hearted consequences for incorrect guesses, like doing a silly impression, telling a bad joke, or singing a line from a British song.
Drink Responsibly
Project Beer always encourages responsible drinking. Please know your limits, stay hydrated, and never drink and drive. This game is about fun, laughter, and a bit of friendly competition – not about getting excessively drunk. If you're feeling the effects, switch to a soft drink or water. Cheers!
