Verbal Volley: The Reflex-Testing Bar Game

Setup

Getting started with Verbal Volley is as easy as ordering your next round! All you need are:

  • Players: A minimum of 2, but the more the merrier (and more chaotic!).
  • Drinks: Everyone needs a drink in hand – be it a pint, a cider, a spirit, or a soft drink.
  • Ears & Reflexes: Keep them sharp!

There's no special equipment, cards, or dice needed, making it the perfect impromptu pub game.

How to Play

Verbal Volley is all about paying attention to what's being said around you. The game revolves around a series of 'trigger words' or phrases, each with a corresponding physical action. When a trigger word is spoken by anyone in the group, everyone must perform the associated action as quickly as possible.

The catch? The last person to correctly perform the action drinks!

The Penalty

The designated drinker must take two fingers worth of their current beverage. For those unfamiliar, this is typically measured by holding two fingers horizontally against the side of your glass and drinking down to that level. Adjust as appropriate for your group's pace and drink strength!

The Rules (Trigger Words & Actions)

Here are the core triggers for Verbal Volley. Feel free to add your own or adapt these!

1. The 'What?' Wonder

  • Trigger: Anyone says the word "What?" (especially when confused or surprised).
  • Action: Everyone must immediately touch their nose with one finger.
  • Penalty: Last person to touch their nose drinks.

2. The 'Errr...' Filler Fumble

  • Trigger: Anyone uses a significant filler word like "Errr...", "Ummm...", or "Like..." (when used excessively or as a pause).
  • Action: Everyone must immediately point at the person who said the filler word.
  • Penalty: Last person to point at the correct individual drinks.

3. The 'Literally' Overload

  • Trigger: Anyone says the word "Literally" or "Basically" (especially when used incorrectly or overused).
  • Action: Everyone must immediately place both hands on top of their head.
  • Penalty: Last person to get their hands on their head drinks.

4. The 'Cheers!' Cross-Up

  • Trigger: Anyone says "Cheers!" when NOT actually making a toast or clinking glasses (e.g., "Cheers for that," "Cheers, mate").
  • Action: Everyone must immediately give a clear thumbs up.
  • Penalty: Last person to give a thumbs up drinks.

5. The 'Specific Name' Shout-Out

  • Trigger: A pre-agreed common name is mentioned (e.g., "Gary", "Sharon", "Dave" – choose one that might realistically come up in conversation).
  • Action: Everyone must immediately clink their glass on the table or with another player's glass (if safe to do so).
  • Penalty: Last person to clink their glass drinks.

Variations & House Rules

  • Designated Speaker: For faster games, only words spoken by a designated 'active speaker' count, or only words spoken by players count (ignoring background chatter).
  • Custom Triggers: Create your own triggers based on common phrases your group uses, or even specific names of people you know might be mentioned!
  • Combo Penalties: If someone fails multiple actions in quick succession, they could face a double penalty.
  • No Talking Rule: If someone talks about the game itself (e.g., "Did you hear him say 'What'?"), they drink!

Drink Responsibly

Project Beer always reminds you to drink responsibly. This game is designed for fun and lighthearted competition, not excessive drinking. Keep an eye on your consumption, know your limits, and ensure everyone is comfortable with the rules. If you're driving, stick to soft drinks or consider an alternative form of penalty (e.g., doing a silly dance, telling a joke). The aim is to have a laugh, not to get dangerously drunk. Cheers!
