The Black and Tan is a layered pint of pale ale or bitter topped with stout. It looks great and drinks smooth. Here's how to layer it.
Ingredients
- Half a pint (284ml) of pale ale or bitter
- Half a pint (284ml) of stout
Method
- Pale first: Pour the pale ale into a pint glass until half full.
- Layer: Hold a spoon upside down over the glass and slowly pour the stout over it.
- Serve: The stout floats on the pale ale; serve straight away.
Tips for the Perfect Black and Tan
- Stouts poured with nitrogen are lighter than many pale ales, which is why they float.
- Pour slowly and keep the spoon just above the surface.
- In Ireland, many people call this drink a 'Half and Half' instead.
Good to Know
The name is avoided in Ireland because of its association with the Black and Tans, a British paramilitary force of the 1920s, so a 'Half and Half' is a more tactful order there.
Please drink responsibly. Know your limits, and never drink and drive.
