The Gimlet is a sharp, simple classic of gin and lime. Just two main ingredients, shaken ice-cold, for a crisp and zesty drink.
Ingredients
- 60ml gin
- 20ml fresh lime juice
- 15ml sugar syrup (or 20ml lime cordial instead of the juice and syrup)
- Ice
- Lime wheel, to garnish
Method
- Shake: Add the gin, lime and syrup (or the lime cordial) to a shaker full of ice.
- Chill: Shake hard for 10-15 seconds.
- Strain: Strain into a chilled coupe.
- Garnish: Add a lime wheel.
Tips for the Perfect Gimlet
- The traditional recipe uses lime cordial, which gives a sweeter, smoother drink; fresh lime and syrup make it brighter.
- A navy-strength gin gives a bolder Gimlet.
- It is also good served over ice in a rocks glass.
A Bit of History
The Gimlet is often linked to the Royal Navy, where lime juice was issued to sailors to prevent scurvy and mixing it with gin was a natural next step.
