The Paloma is Mexico's favourite tequila cocktail: tequila, fresh lime and grapefruit soda over ice with a salted rim. Zesty, refreshing and easy to make.
Ingredients
- 50ml blanco tequila
- 15ml fresh lime juice
- Grapefruit soda, to top (or 60ml fresh pink grapefruit juice, 10ml sugar syrup and soda water)
- Pinch of salt or a salted rim
- Ice
- Grapefruit wedge, to garnish
Method
- Rim the glass: Run a lime wedge around a highball glass and dip it in salt (optional).
- Build: Fill the glass with ice, then add the tequila and lime juice.
- Top: Top up with grapefruit soda and give it a gentle stir.
- Garnish: Add a wedge of grapefruit.
Tips for the Perfect Paloma
- Use 100% agave tequila for a cleaner flavour.
- Pink grapefruit gives a slightly sweeter, prettier drink than white.
- A pinch of salt in the drink itself lifts the citrus, even if you skip the rim.
Make It Smoky
Swap half the tequila for mezcal for a smoky twist on the classic.
