The Tequila Slammer is the classic party shot: lick the salt, knock back the tequila and bite the lime. Here's how to do it properly.

Ingredients

  • 25ml blanco tequila
  • Pinch of salt
  • Lime wedge

Method

  1. Salt: Lick the back of your hand between thumb and forefinger, sprinkle on a little salt.
  2. Shoot: Lick the salt, then knock back the tequila in one go.
  3. Bite: Bite into the lime wedge straight away.

Tips for the Perfect Tequila Slammer

  • The salt and lime soften the burn, but a good 100% agave tequila barely needs them.
  • Keep the measure to a single 25ml shot.
  • Try orange slices dusted with cinnamon instead of lime.

In Mexico, good tequila is usually sipped rather than shot, often alongside a chaser of sangrita, a spicy tomato and citrus drink.
