The Roundhouse Kick Cocktail: A Drink That Packs a Punch
Inspired by the legendary Chuck Norris, The Roundhouse Kick cocktail is not for the faint of heart. This isn't just a drink; it's a statement. Combining the smooth power of bourbon with the fiery zest of ginger beer and a touch of maple sweetness, it’s a perfectly balanced concoction that delivers a refreshing yet robust flavour with every sip. Prepare to be invigorated!
Ingredients:
2 oz (60ml) Bourbon (a good quality, full-bodied bourbon)
0.75 oz (22.5ml) Fresh Lime Juice
0.5 oz (15ml) Maple Syrup (Grade A Amber or Dark)
2 Dashes Angostura Bitters
4-5 oz (120-150ml) Ginger Beer (to top, adjust to taste)
Ice
Lime wedge or wheel, for garnish
Instructions:
Chill Your Glass: Start by filling a sturdy rocks glass or highball glass with fresh ice to chill it down.
Combine Ingredients: In a mixing glass, add the bourbon, fresh lime juice, maple syrup, and Angostura bitters.
Stir Well: Add ice to the mixing glass and stir vigorously for about 15-20 seconds until the mixture is well-chilled and combined.
Strain: Strain the mixture into your chilled rocks glass, over fresh ice.
Top with Ginger Beer: Top the drink with ginger beer. Start with 4 oz and add more if you prefer a longer drink, ensuring you maintain the balance.
Garnish: Gently stir once to combine, then garnish with a fresh lime wedge or wheel. Serve immediately and prepare for the kick!
Tips for the Ultimate Kick:
Quality Matters: Use a good quality bourbon – it’s the backbone of this drink. Its character will shine through.
Fresh Lime: Always use freshly squeezed lime juice for the best, brightest flavour. Bottled juice simply won't cut it.
Maple Syrup: Opt for a pure maple syrup, not artificial pancake syrup. The deeper, earthy notes of real maple complement the bourbon beautifully.
Adjust Sweetness/Spice: If you prefer it sweeter, add a touch more maple. If you want more spice, choose a spicier brand of ginger beer.
Glassware: While a rocks glass is traditional for a strong drink, a highball glass works well if you want a longer, more refreshing serve with more ginger beer.
Variations:
Spicy Roundhouse: Muddle a thin slice of fresh jalapeño in the mixing glass before adding other ingredients for an extra fiery punch.
Smoky Roundhouse: Add 0.25 oz of a good quality mezcal alongside the bourbon for a smoky depth that adds another layer of complexity.
Berry Roundhouse: Muddle 3-4 fresh raspberries or blackberries in the mixing glass for a fruity twist before adding other ingredients. This adds a lovely colour and sweet-tart note.
