Baked Apples with Oats and Cranberries

Bring baked apples with oats and cranberries to the table for something different alongside a drink. The recipe balances flavour and texture using straightforward techniques and measured ingredients. Serves 4. Have everything ready before you start, follow the cooking and cooling times below, and pour a small glass of Sweet Cider when the food is ready.

Ingredients

Serves 4

  • 4 large eating apples

  • 60 g rolled oats

  • 40 g dried cranberries

  • 40 g light brown sugar

  • 40 g butter

  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

  • 100 ml apple juice

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 190°C, 170°C fan. Core apples without cutting through bases and score skins around the middle.

  2. Rub butter into oats, sugar and cinnamon, then stir in cranberries.

  3. Stand apples in a snug dish, fill centres with oat mixture and pour juice around them.

  4. Bake for 30–40 minutes until tender but holding shape, spooning juices over halfway. Rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Serving Suggestions

Allow the full cooling, setting or freezing time in the method before serving. Cut or scoop modest portions after a meal and keep chilled ingredients refrigerated until needed.

Pairing Tips

Start with Sweet Cider. Apple fruit and gentle sweetness suit the baked apples and dried fruit. A sweeter cider avoids tasting too acidic beside dessert. Serve a modest measure so the drink supports the food. An alcohol-free beer in a similar style is also an option; choose one with a comparable balance of sweetness and bitterness.
